HP Sirmaur starts month-long farm conservation campaign to save soil, water and air

Nahan, June 8 (UNI) The increasing and indiscriminate use of chemical fertilizers and pesticides in agriculture has raised concerns among agricultural scientists.
In light of the declining soil fertility, polluted groundwater, and the adverse effects on the environment, a month-long "Save the Farm Campaign" is being launched in Sirmaur district. This campaign, a joint effort by the Agriculture Department, the ATMA Project, and the Krishi Vigyan Kendra, is encouraging farmers to return to scientific and natural farming.
Dr. Pankaj Mittal, Principal Scientist and In-charge of the Mountain Agricultural Research Center and Krishi Vigyan Kendra, Sirmaur, stated that the uncontrolled use of agricultural chemicals and fertilisers is affecting not only farms but also human health and the environment.
He stated that if this trend is not controlled in time, future generations could suffer serious consequences.
He stated that the objective of the Save the Farm Campaign is not only to raise awareness among farmers but also to sensitise the entire society to this issue. Under the campaign, farmers, agricultural input sellers, self-help groups and consumers are also being connected so that the concept of safe agriculture and safe food can be strengthened. Deputy Director of Agriculture Dr. Saheb Singh said that in the camps, farmers are being advised to use fertilizers based on soil testing.
He said that healthy soil is the foundation of better production and sustainable agriculture. Dr. Navdeep Koondel, Director of ATMA Project, said that the unscientific use of chemicals in fruit and vegetable production is causing harm to soil, water and environment. He called upon the farmers to adopt natural and traditional agricultural practices.
